“Me again, allow me to pick up where I left off"
These are the words opening the third album by London-based MC Little Simz. As announced in the first verse, she takes the sound from her last full-length album ”Stillness in Wonderland“ and puts it one step further, sounding more mature and honest than ever before.Everything about this album is on point. The production, the instrumentation and most of all Simz’ sharp and clever lyricism reach new heights.
She raps from a smart and feminist perspective about a range of deeply personal topics. The lyrics deal with her coming to fame, with personal struggles (“Therapy”) and self-care (“Selfish”).
Her flows are tight and complex. On a track like “Venom” she shows once again, that she is an outstanding lyricist and a MC to the bone. The whole album has a coherent sound, yet the ten instrumentals are rich in variety.
She has reached a new peak with this record, with her voice sounding wise and smooth. It looks like she has now found her voice for the world, while she is not afraid to talk about personal and touching issues. On top of that, she manages to include real hit singles like “101 FM” and “Selfish”.
Grey Area is clearly Little Simz‘ best record so far and one of UK‘s greatest Hip-Hop albums of the past couple years.
